What is sustainable packaging?
Sustainable packaging is a type of packaging that is designed and produced in a way that has a reduced impact on the environment. This means that the packaging materials used are eco-friendly and can be recycled, biodegraded, or composted. The packaging is also designed to be more efficient, using fewer resources while still protecting the product inside.
Additionally, sustainable packaging may incorporate new technologies, such as bioplastics or zero-waste designs, that reduce waste and pollution. The goal of sustainable packaging is to minimize the negative impact of packaging on the environment and reduce carbon footprint, while still meeting the needs of businesses and consumers.
The environmental impact of traditional packaging vs sustainable packaging
The impact of traditional packaging on the environment can be quite significant. Traditional packaging materials, such as plastic, glass, or aluminium, can take hundreds or even thousands of years to decompose, and they often contribute to pollution, landfills, and ocean if not recycled. Moreover, the production of these materials requires a significant amount of energy and resources, which further depletes the planet’s natural resources.
On the other hand, sustainable packaging can offer a more responsible and eco-friendly solution. These packaging materials are designed to have a lower impact on the environment than traditional packaging. For example, they may be made from renewable resources or have a lower carbon footprint. Moreover, sustainable packaging is often designed to be more efficient, using fewer materials and resulting in less waste.
Another environmental advantage of sustainable packaging is that it often incorporates new technologies that reduce waste and pollution. Bioplastics, for example, can be a more sustainable alternative to traditional plastics, as they are made from plant-based materials that biodegrade much more quickly.
The benefits of sustainable/eco-friendly packaging for your business.
Using sustainable packaging materials and eco-friendly packaging can have several benefits for businesses. Here are some of them:
Reducing waste:
Sustainable packaging can help businesses reduce the amount of packaging waste they generate. Packaging that is designed to be more efficient and use fewer resources can result in fewer packaging materials being used overall. This means less waste going to landfills and fewer resources being depleted.
Improving brand reputation:
By using sustainable packaging, businesses can demonstrate that they take their environmental responsibilities seriously. This can help improve their reputation and show customers and stakeholders that they are committed to sustainability.
Attracting environmentally-conscious consumers:
Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their purchasing decisions, and many are actively seeking out eco-friendly products and packaging. By using sustainable packaging, businesses can attract these environmentally-conscious consumers and position themselves as leaders in sustainability.
Cost savings:
Sustainable packaging can also result in cost savings for businesses. By using fewer resources, businesses can reduce their packaging costs, as well as their shipping and transportation costs due to lighter and more efficient packaging.
Increased sales:
Sustainable packaging can also have a positive impact on sales. Many consumers are willing to pay a premium for eco-friendly products, and eco-friendly packaging can help differentiate a business’s products from its competitors. By offering sustainable packaging, businesses can potentially increase their sales and gain a competitive advantage.
Meeting sustainability goals
Many companies have set sustainability goals, such as reducing their environmental impact or increasing their use of eco-friendly materials. Using eco-friendly packaging and sustainable packaging materials can help businesses meet these goals and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability.
Using sustainable packaging can have numerous benefits for businesses, including reducing waste, improving their reputation, attracting environmentally-conscious consumers, cost savings, and potentially increased sales. By prioritizing sustainability in their packaging decisions, businesses can make a positive impact on the environment while also benefitting their bottom .
The key point is that you must understand the requirements and benefits of your existing packaging before you try to change to possibly more sustainable options, as the last think you should wish to do, is increase food waste or unknowingly reduce pack performance.
Sustainable packaging regulations in the UK:
In the UK, there are several regulations and initiatives in place to encourage the use of sustainable packaging.
Packaging Waste Regulations: The UK Packaging Waste Regulations place obligations on businesses to recover and recycle their packaging materials to reduce waste generation. Businesses must register with a compliance scheme and report on their packaging waste generation. They must also ensure a certain percentage of their packaging is recycled.
Producer Responsibility Obligations: The Producer Responsibility Obligations require businesses that produce packaging materials to manage their waste in an environmentally responsible manner. This includes recycling a certain percentage of their packaging waste and reporting on their waste management activities.
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): EPR is a new policy initiative that is set to be introduced in the UK in 2023. Under this scheme, producers of packaging will be required to cover the full costs of the collection, recycling, and disposal of their products. This is designed to incentivize producers to design packaging that is easier to recycle and reduce the amount of waste generated.
Single-Use Plastics Directive: The Single-Use Plastics Directive is an EU-wide initiative that aims to reduce the impact of single-use plastic products on the environment. This includes banning certain single-use plastic products, such as straws and cutlery, and introducing requirements for the design and labelling of plastic products to make them easier to recycle.
Plastic Packaging Tax: From April 2022, the UK will introduce a tax on plastic packaging that contains less than 30% recycled content. The aim of this tax is to incentivize businesses to use more sustainable materials in their packaging and reduce the amount of plastic waste generated in the UK.
Types of sustainable packaging for business use in the UK
In the UK, businesses have a variety of options for using sustainable packaging.
Biodegradable:
Is made from materials that can naturally break down over time, such as plant-based plastics. This type of packaging is designed to decompose in a landfill or composting facility, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in the environment.
Compostable:
Similar to biodegradable packaging, compostable packaging can break down naturally over time. However, compostable packaging requires specific conditions to break down, such as the presence of heat, oxygen, and moisture. Compostable packaging can be safely added to a compost pile, but it cannot be recycled in a traditional recycling facility.
Recycled:
Made from materials that have been previously used and recycled, such as paper, cardboard, and plastic. By using recycled materials, businesses can reduce the amount of waste generated and conserve natural.
Businesses should also endeavour if required to use virgin materials, that they are recyclable, and in as simple a format as possible, to assist sorting / separation and recycling.
Reusable:
Designed to be used multiple times, reducing the need for single-use packaging. Examples include reusable bags, containers, and bottles.
Sustainably sourced:
Products such as bamboo, sugarcane, and wheat straw packaging are finding success as sustainably sourced packaging. However, the Supply Chain and their Carbon Footprint needs to be carefully considered, with some of these less local options.
